For me sometimes it's about outfits. Too often a lot of studios skimp out on the lingerie and the outfits. I hate seeing Shein outfits and 99-cent lingerie. There's real nice stuff out there. Good lingerie can sometimes make a good scene. But when they put neon green, fishnets on someone... it's such a fucking turn off. I'm not trying to argue, just point out that decent acting, plot and direction adds to porn. Pirates is a good example of that, but that was produced in 2005 and there hasn't really been anything equivalent.
Private and Marc Dorcel were also producing high quality films, but they don't have the budget any more.
I agree with you, I only used Pirates to show what can be done with a decent budget and commitment to that sort of quality. The industry isnt making the money it used to, so there is a tendency to put quantity over quality to compensate. However, that doesnt mean that everyone has done so, or that there arent alternatives (in the west that is). For a single scene, like i mentioned earlier, the brand that owns DEEPER, TUSHY, etc are high quality and "decently acted out", but it all depends on what your looking for.
If you're looking for like the more theatrical, I would say look to a few directors and maybe start there. Stoya has directed for like the past decade and all of her stuff is very cerebral/artsy/entertaining.
Unfortunately, if Asian is your thing, youre not going to find much over here. Sadly, a lot of the more popular stars are pushed as "flavor of the week" and just push out scenes. I dont see many expanding into the more plot centered films.
