For any of you who want to watch VR through standard flat screen, I strongly advise AGAINST converting it, mainly because; 1. It'll take forever and beyond to convert since most VR videos are long (in duration) and big (in resolution) *that's what she said * and 2. Unless you watch it through a square 1:1 monitor, your video will be cropped and you'll miss a lot of the action especially if the scene took advantage of the entire frame. And even if you manage to watch it with a square aspect ratio, 3. Your view of the scene will be distorted as hell. Like the more off-center something is in the frame, the funnier it'll look.
Instead, I'd suggest treating it as 360 video. This means, with a capable video player, you can watch it and be able to zoom or drag around the entire frame in real-time (Youtube 360 & Eporner VR are good examples of this). Personally I use VLC player (both PC and smartphone) to watch VR videos. However you have to make the file recognizable as a 360 video beforehand otherwise it's still gonna be played as a standard flat.
From my experience, I found the optimal video resolution to watch is somewhere around 2x the monitor resolution. Because I feel like most VR scenes are shot really close to the action to the point where I practically never have to zoom the video past 2x. So if you only have 1080p monitor like me, 2160p/4K video is gonna be good enough.
