I mean I wasn't expecting them to find out directly but I could definitely see a different family member or friend of the family finding out and exposing it. Though they also don't live in japan anymore so it was probably easier to avoid the scenario.

They first met each other on some penpal-esque app, talked for a while, then forgot about each other. Then he was in Japan some years later, messaged her, and they started dating shortly after.
Extremely paraphrased and I don't know why I remember it, I'm ashamed to have remembered even that much of the story.
